1. Some people say that students should study many lessons during a semester, but others say that it is better for students to just take three or four lessons. Which do you think is better?
Nowadays, schools are offering students a large range of courses, from traditional literacy to recently created courses, such as foreign language studies, financial management, and risk management, to name a few. Some people believe that students should choose as many courses as they could, whereas others argue that taking three or four courses one semester is enough. To my understanding, it is more appropriate to take three or four courses a semester.
Taking three or four courses one semester could enable students to develop their own interests and build their social network during leisure time, so that students will become more versatile and outgoing in the future. Generally speaking, it is not extremely difficult for students to complete assignments of three or four courses a semester. Therefore, most of the students could have sufficient time to participate in some beneficial activities, such as volunteering in the community, hanging out with friends, or working out at the gym, among others. Those activities, unlike study, enable students to do things that they like and to communicate with people who share the same interests with them. During this process, students will enjoy developing their own interests and build their social network, which will definitely benefit them in the future.
Moreover, choosing three or four courses instead of too many courses per semester could help students relax and maintain a positive attitude towards life. According to a recent survey, more and more children today are suffering from depression because they are forced to study extremely hard. In order to avoid this type of mental disease, students should not spend too many efforts on academic study. In this sense, by taking three or four courses a semester, students could have time to play and relax during their leisure time, so to relieve the stress caused by academic requirements.
Admittedly, taking many courses a semester, students might have the opportunity to learn more knowledge, including useful skills and practices that are beneficial to students’ future. However, once students become tired and feel stressful, they will become less motivated in learning, which will negatively influence their academic performance in all classes as a result.
Based on the above discussion, it is obvious that students should not sign up too many courses a semester. Taking three or four courses is more appropriate and beneficial from the perspectives of developing students’ interests and keeping a positive mental status.
2. A high school has decided that all students must take a class in which they learn a practical skill. School administrators are trying to decide whether to hold a class in cooking, managing personal finances or auto repair. Which do you think the school should require students to take? Why?
In my home country, the curricula inhigh schools are extremely intense for students. Many high school students are under great pressure at school, and they might feel stressed out if one more required course is added to busy schedule. However, if they have to choose one course to take, I believe that a cooking class is better than a personal financial management class or auto repair class, because a cooking class could benefit students in different ways.
To begin with, a cooking class could provide students with opportunities to relax and escape from intense academic study for a while. In a cooking class, students neither need to read lots of materials nor to solve complicated mathematic problems. What they need to do isto follow the chef’s instructions and learn how to serve delicious dishes. Moreover, students could cooperate and communicate with each other during the process of cooking. By working cooperatively with their peers, students couldlearn more about their classmates and thus become friends with each other, which is almost impossible in classrooms where students are forbidden todiscuss in my home country. Thus, a cooking class could help students relax ina pleasant atmosphere.
Another advantage of cooking class isthat the skill of cooking could benefits students in a long run. In the future, some high students might choose to enter colleges or universities in their homecountry, whereas others will choose to study abroad. It is possible that manyof them will relocate to a new city and live in apartments with roommates. If those students have learned how to cook during high school, they could cook bythemselves, and treat their friends with delicious dishes when they have time.In this way, the students could save a lot of money because they do not have toeat outside in restaurants that are usually more expensive than cooking athome. Moreover, the students’ friends would appreciate a lot being invited totheir places and served with mouthwatering dishes. Hence, a cooking class couldbenefit students even after their graduation.
Compared with a cooking class, apersonal financial management course would be too boring because students stillneed to sit in classrooms and complete difficult tasks. As for an auto-repaircourse, students might find it dangerous because they need to use tools thatthey are not familiar with to repair cars. Furthermore, in order to open an auto-repair course, high schools need to spend a lot of money purchasing vehicles and equipment. I am afraid that the administration offices in high schools arenot fond of this idea.
Based on the above discussion, a cookingclass could benefit students in that they could relieve the pressure from academic learning, and could utilize the skill of cooking in the future.
3. Some people think at the start of a new year, it’s important to set a goal of improving a specific aspect of life. They call it a new-year resolution. Which of the following new-year resolution would you choose?
1. Help others in your community 2. Improve your health by exercising more and eat nutritious food 3. Manage your time better"
Many people in the world would set a goal for the coming New Year. They would liketo have a fresh start to make their life better. Last year, I wasted too muchon video games and sleeping. I would choose to manage my time better as my New Year resolution. I am about to live a more meaningful life.
To begin with, plans should be made in order to organize my time more efficiently. A reasonable plan would be made on daily basis in advance. In this way, it willbe clear that what needs to be done. When completing the plan, it will be agood idea to give myself some rewards. In this way, it becomes motivating tofollow the plan. Laziness is bound to get in the way for me to achieve my goal. In order to overcome it, it is necessary to form a study group so that we could encourage and support each other.
In addition, good health means the most to everybody, especially for those people who are eager to accomplish something big. I have a dream that one day I will become an influential photographer in China. However, last year, it was quite often for me to stay up late, playing video games. In the next morning, the breakfast was often skipped. It was absolutely harmful for my physical andpsychological health. Fortunately, I am a big fan of playing basketball. Iwould try to participate in doing sports regularly. It will be more efficient for me to study when I am in a better health condition.
Moreover, I would spend my weekends visiting different places and meeting different people. It is crucial for a photographer to have rich life experience. I might not have much. But I am able to enrich mine by listening to others’ life stories and learning about the culture and history about a place. Hence, it might provide a new perspective for me when taking some photos.
In sum, life is short. Time is valuable. In order to make the most of my time, Iwould make plans, do some sports as well as travelling and making friends with different backgrounds. In this way, my life will be more colorful.
